Oslo, Norway - Travel Guide
Oslo is the capital of one of the largest countries in the Scandinavian
peninsula in particular and Europe in general: Norway.
Let us get to know more about Norway at first. It is situated in northern
Europe, bordered by Sweden and Finland to the east and north-east, as well as by
the Norwegian Sea (Atlantic Ocean) to the West, North and South.
The official language is the Norwegian. Government is a constitutional monarchy
with the current monarch being Harald V and the prime minister being Jens
Stoltenberg.
Norway declared its independence from the union that it had with its eastern
neighbor Sweden in June 7th, 1905.
Norway is as state, very large, spanning an area of more than 385,000 square
kilometers with land making up around 93% of it.
Despite the large area, Norway is not fully inhabited and the population is
rather small, estimated at less than 5 million. Yet, Norway is considered a rich
nation and has a GDP exceeding 213 billion dollars.
Its time zone is GMT+1 during the winter season and GMT+2 during the summer
season (daylight saving).
The currency is the Kroner (with a NOK abbreviation) and the current exchange
rate is at around 5.3 NOK for every USD.
The international calling code is +47.
Oslo is not just a city and the capital of Norway, but it is also a
municipality. It has a total area of around 454 square kilometers, with land
accounting for around 94% of this figure.
The 2007 census has estimated its population at an excess of 550,000 with a
density of around 1300 persons per square kilometer.
Oslo is a place of choice for your visit to Norway.
Our guide will help go through some of hotel choice (Oslo
hotels), whether you're looking to spoil yourself or to find a budget place.
It is quiet important to note though that Oslo's accommodation is quiet
expensive compared to some other parts of the continent. This price assessment
is also noticeable if you're going to shop.
As you'll read in our Oslo shopping guide, the
experience is almost always enjoyable, with many shops and malls scattered all
around Oslo, giving the young and the old an equal chance of satisfaction, but
don't expect to find a bargain offer at every corner.
We'll also guide you through the many Oslo museums
which are very popular among tourist and feature many themes that tend to
attract most age groups and many tastes.
Finally, transportation is an important factor in every trip, this is why we
have devised an Oslo transportation and car rental
guide which will hopefully make your trip and movement rather smooth.
